Surgical treatment of complications after use of facial injections of PMMA

The fillers used for improvement of wrinkles and volume gain in various areas of the face is a common procedure nowadays not only due to changes in the paradigms of facial aging but because of the pursuit of faster, more accessible procedures with less downtime. For this reason grows everyday the search for products claimed to be permanent, which would lead to a lasting correction of the problem without the need of periodic injections. In this paper we present cases of complications following facial injections with PMMA (polymethylmetacrilate)-containing fillers, gathered by consulting the medical records of the Ivo Pitanguy Institute from 1999 to 2007 as well as monitoring of patients who presented between January 2008 and October 2010. We describe the surgical, imaging and pathological findings, characterizing the complications resulting from injection of these products in the face. Of the 13 patients included in the study 6 were followed for 2 years and 9 months, and evaluated periodically.
